Roadworthy Certificates - do you need one?

Roadworthy certificates are an essential according to Queensland Transport when transferring a second hand vehicle to a new owner, transferring to Queensland registration from another state or re-registering an unregistered vehicle. Vehicles that require roadworthy certificates include cars, motorcycles and trailers, and any other vehicle up to 4,500kg Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM).

Roadworthy/safety certificates are essential to guarantee that the vehicle complies with basic standards. A roadworthy inspection must be completed by a qualified mechanic where they will check the functionality of the tyres, brakes, steering, suspension, windscreen, lights and check the body for rust or damage.

You must carry all necessary certificates when selling a registered used car and not doing so can incur a hefty fine. The new owner of the car won't be able to transfer the car without a written report or safety certificate.

How to Prepare Your Vehicle for a Roadworthy Inspection

To ensure that your vehicle passes the roadworthy inspection the first time, it's important to prepare beforehand. Keep reading to learn the simple steps you can take to increase the chances of obtaining a roadworthy certificate for your vehicle.

Check the tyres

Ensure that all tyres, including the spare, have sufficient tread depth and are free from any cuts, punctures or uneven wear. Make sure they're inflated to the correct pressure, as stated in your vehicle's manual or on the tyre placard.

Test the lights

All lights, including headlights, indicators, brake lights and reverse lights, must be functional and clean. Replace any broken bulbs and ensure all lenses are free from cracks or damage.

Inspect the windscreen and wipers

Your windscreen should be free from cracks and chips. If you find any, consider repairing or replacing the windscreen. Additionally, ensure that your windscreen wipers are functioning properly and the blades are in good condition.

Check the brakes and suspension

Test your brakes for any unusual noises or decreased responsiveness. Make sure your suspension is working correctly and there's no excessive bouncing when going over bumps.

Clean and tidy the interior

A cluttered or dirty interior can create a negative impression during the inspection. Remove all personal items, vacuum the interior and wipe down surfaces.

Examine the engine and fluid levels

Check for any leaks or unusual noises coming from your engine. Ensure that your oil, coolant, brake fluid and power steering fluid levels are within the recommended range.

Test the seatbelts

All seatbelts must be in good working order and free from damage. Make sure they retract smoothly and securely latch.

Address any warning lights

If any warning lights are illuminated on your dashboard, address the issue before the inspection.

How Long is a Roadworthy Certificate Valid?

According to the Queensland Government, the time a safety certificate is valid depends on the type of sale:

  • For licensed motor dealers, certificates are valid for 3 months or 1,000km (whichever expires first) from the date of issue
  • For all other sellers, certificates are valid for 2 months or 2,000km (whichever expires first) from the date of issue.

You can use the same safety certificate to register an unregistered vehicle and then transfer the registration, as long as you do this within the limits set out previously. You will need to get a new certificate every time you sell a vehicle, even if you sell it within the limits set out previously.

Keep in mind that a roadworthy certificate only serves as a snapshot of the vehicle's condition at the time of inspection. It does not guarantee that the vehicle will remain in roadworthy condition for the entire validity period.
